Alpe d’Huez is one of five different resorts in the ski area. The area is serviced by 150 different ski lifts, which can handle up to 95,000 skiers per hour, and 304 different pistes. As the resort is based at 1500m, it is usually possible to ski back to the resort when snowfall is good.
Alpe d’Huez has some of the longest individual skiing routes in the world, including a 16-km descent. These are perfect for the most experienced skiers, but beginners will be delighted that the slopes closest to the resort are gentle and perfect for first-timers.
The fantastic ski area covers five resorts and two villages, so you have hours and hours of practice. The gondola helps easily connect areas, so you have a good starting and end point. Beginners can explore the gentle greens, the drags and rolling carpets to practice their skills. Meanwhile, intermediates have long cruise blues from Marmottes and the Alpette area. Advanced skiers have the top of the mountain to test their skills on the long reds, on piste runs and the groomed long Sarenne area. When there is fresh snow, the Tunnel run has bumps and corners for you to test your quick thinking.
A Snowboarders Mecca
Alpe d’Huez is also renowned for its famous snowboarding schools and centres. The resort has previously hosted the World Snowboard Cup, and many areas have been designated exclusively for snowboarding.
